Post April 27 & 28 - Poughkeepsie, NY - Keith J. Murphy Tournament

This is the 20th edition of this annual charity tournament and the Wappingers Falls Merchants Softball League is hoping to make it a biggie. The volunteers of years past(The Wappingers Knights of Columbus and the Murphy family) are returning to help the league board with all of the tournament necessities.
Teams are now being accepted and encouraged to participate in this tournament scheduled to play on April 27 & 28, 2013. "The Murphy" is a round-robin bracket into single-elimination tournament with an upper and lower men's bracket and a co-ed bracket. All brackets have a three-game guarantee. The cost is $275.00 per team. The men's upper bracket winner will earn a non-paid berth to the ASA National Tournament. This is probably going to be the last hurrah for this tournament, so the league is really trying to push to get as many teams as possible. With the additional help from the Wappingers Knights of Columbus and the Murphy family to run consessions and such, anything short of 24 total teams would be a disappointment. The more teams there are, the more money that can be given out to charities.

Sheafe Road is only a mile or so from Bowdoin so if you are up there, please consider stopping down to eat/drink when you have a break between games."

Post Schedule

The Murphy schedule for Saturday. We'll be completing the tournament on Saturday so be ready for a long day! The weather is supposed to be perfect so it should be great. Because of the long day, we ask that teams be ready to roll at your scheduled start times so we can keep things on schedule.
We realize the lower division normally is at Bowdoin, but this year we wound up with a larger upper division so we had to switch in order to avoid those teams having to drive to make games. We are trying to arrange to have someone at Sheafe to sell drinks and snacks plus Franco and Pat will be stopping by in the morning and afternoon.

Please note: games at Sheafe will start at 8am; over at Bowdoin, the park gates won't be opened at 7:30am so games there will begin at 8:30am.
If you have any questions, your best bet is to email Pat at [email protected] ; On Saturday, use the cell numbers below to text or call.

Thanks again to all of the teams for your support.

KEITH J. MURPHY MEMORIAL
SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT RULES

1. This tournament is strictly for the enjoyment of its participants and is a charitable family tournament; a warm-up for players and umpires alike, so please try to be courteous and understanding of everyone during this weekends play. If a problem arises, please let one of the tournament directors know (Franco (845) 494-9493 or Pat (845) 401-3533) and the situation will be resolved.
Your cooperation in all matters is imperative and appreciated. Thank You!
2. This tournament will run strictly by A.S.A. rules unless otherwise noted in this document.
3. All team fees must be paid before your team can participate.
4. Insurance rules dictate that all teams must be A.S.A. registered to participate.
5. Home team is determined by a coin flip for each game... No Exceptions!
6. During the tournament, all batters will start with a one (1) ball and one (1) strike count. No extra foul shall be awarded after a batter has two strikes. Games should last no more than one hour and ten minutes. You must hustle on and off the field. In the event that a game should go into extra innings, the player making the last out from the previous inning shall be placed on second base and the game shall proceed as normal. This action will continue until a winner can be determined.
7. At Sheafe Road, there is a limit of three (3) over-the-fence home runs per team with the 1-up rule applying. Any additional home runs will be scored as an out unless both teams have the same number (you can only be ď1-upĒ on the other team).
8. No stealing allowed.
9. No metal cleats allowed.
10. A legal pitch shall be delivered with a perceptible arc and reach a height of at least six (6) feet from the ground while not exceeding a height of twelve (12) feet from the ground.
11. A forfeit will be declared if a team cannot field at least nine (9) players. Any team starting with only nine (9) players should see the umpire to explain the A.S.A. short-handed rule and how it applies (the tenth spot in the lineup will be declared an out until a body is placed in the tenth spot in the lineup.)
12. Profanity and vulgarity is strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated. This rule pertains to all managers, coaches, players, and visitors on or near the team bench or playing field. Consider this your warning; Umpires or tournament officials can and will eject the offending individual for at least the rest of that game and if need be the rest of the tournament.
13. Anyone striking an umpire, manager, coach, or another player on or off the field will not be permitted to participate in the remainder of the tournament in any capacity. If the assaulted person should wish to file charges, the management of this tournament will call the proper authorities and assist with the prosecution of the aggressor.
14. Forfeit time is game time. You must have your team ready to go including line-ups at your designated start time.
15. Twelve-Run Mercy Rule takes effect after losing team has batted at least five (5) times and has had an equal number of turns at bat as the winning team has had. And the winning team is ahead by at least twelve (12) runs.
16. Protests must be made in accordance with A.S.A. rules and immediately brought to the attention of a Tournament Director. The protest committee will consist of the Tournament Directors and an A.S.A. State Delegate or his representative.
17. No Alcoholic beverages allowed on the playing field. If an A.S.A. official feels your behavior puts you or others in jeopardy you will not be permitted to continue playing.
18. Only A.S.A. sanctioned bats may be used.
19. Courtesy runners are allowed (only one per inning) by using the person who made the last out for the offensive team or a player not yet in the line-up. If in the first inning no outs have been recorded and an extra player is not available, a courtesy runner will not be allowed.
20. Any player that plays on a menís (upper or lower division) team on Saturday, cannot play for a different menís team on Sunday. However, a player of a mixed team on Saturday can return and play on a menís team on Sunday. Hence, if a player plays for a menís team Saturday, he then can play for a mixed team on Saturday, as well, or vice-versa.
21. Upper and Lower division seeding after bracket play will be determined by:
A. Win-Loss Record
B. Total Runs Scored
C. Run Differential
D. Head to head (if there is a tie within a bracket)
E. Coin toss (if somehow all of the above is still even)
