Default Where to stand from the plate

What determines why guys stand close to the plate or off the plate? For example Jeff Hall stands close to plate where as Rusty Bumgardner prefers off the plate. Arm length? Bat weight? Prefer to pull or prefer to hit opo? Prefering inside pitch (forcing an inside pitch by being close to the plate).

It is a combination of things including how compact your swing is, where you prefer to hit, and sometimes where you expect a pitch to be thrown. Basically, you want to put yourself in a position to hit a ball thrown anywhere over the plate. If you have a compact swing or prefer to pull the ball, that means standing closer. If you don't or prefer to hit oppo, you will stand farther back.
