Default 1st post here

I lurked around the other site a lot a couple of years ago, but just couldn't bring myself to be a part of the nastiness that cropped up all too often. Found this forum a couple of months ago, and after checking it out, I decided to join. There are a number of current posts I want to weigh in on, so this is as good a time to join as ever. I do recognize some of the members here from the other site. I have to say I still find Frisco's avatar a bit disturbing!

I'll be 57 later this summer, still play 40-50 rec league games a year, mostly at shortstop. I'm not as good as I was a few years ago, but I can still hold my own against the younger guys, praise God! Been playing slow pitch since 1987. I coach a men's rec league team, a coed team in a church league hosted by, and at, the church I belong to. I also oversee the church league, and take care of the infield at the church field. I'm not too hard to find April - Sept.
And I hit with a 30 ounce Worth Supercell 2.

Welcome to the Z. We are glad to have you. I like the attitudes on this site a lot better also.

Btw, with the SS taking care of the infield, I bet it is in very good shape.

Welcome! Glad you like it so far. That's one heavy bat so you must be doing well for an "old guy"!!

Don't let yer meatloaf!
2 reasons

1. Simple physics. If you were driving nails with a hammer, a 20 oz hammer will drive the nail further through the board with each hit than a 16 oz hammer will. Same principle applies to slowpitch. The heavier bat will drive the heavy, slow moving, ball with more force than a lighter bat will, assuming you can maintain decent bat speed with the heavier bat. Wiffle ball is all about bat speed. Slowpitch, not so much.

2. Natural progression. 20 years ago, when I lifted weights regularly, I used a 38 oz bat. Then I picked up 3 Steele's bats on clearance - 36, 34 and 32 oz. When the 36 died, I used the 34, and so on. (The 34 was the best, and most comfortable for me). I eventually found the Supercells and like the feel. I've had 31 and 32 oz Supercells, but the 30 oz just feels the best. I have a 28, almost identical to the 30, and it just doesn't feel quite right for me. Also have a new 29 waiting.

Being 6' 3", 210, is also a factor.

"old guy"? No idea who you're referring to. There are no old guys on my team.

^^^I resent that...I didn't call you old guy old guy. I compared you to a 20 year old lol.
I can see by that history it is what you are use to and that's cool. It just sounds more like 16" softball talk more than 12" I guess. It does depend on what league u play too. Usssa you can get a speedier 4' high pitch that I doubt you'd have much success with, useing a heavy bat but higher arc leagues give you that extra second to load up indeed.

But im not sure that hammer science is totally right on though because my 220lb. power hitter swings a very successful 26oz. But im no scientist

Don't let yer meatloaf!
