Default What is the Right Call?

Baseball or fastpitch question.

Man on third with two outs. Batter swings and misses on third strike, ball gets away from catcher. Catcher throws to first for the out. The runner from third crosses the plate before the out is made.

Does the run count?

That is not how the ump ruled. He called the batter out and said the run scores. None of three coaches were sure. I thought you were right.

You were right with this though. It was my daughter's team. They were playing against a stacked team with nine "travel" players on it. Our team has none. So much for the PAL draft integrity. The score ended up being 10-10.

Without that run, our team would have won. It was still a great game!

Since the third strike was not caught, it is now a time play. If the runner from third crosses before the out is recorded at first base, the run counts.

I've been Umpiring High School fast pitch for 16 years and NCAA for two years.

Willy's right...it's a TIME play and timing matters...as long as no one was on 1st and the dropped pitch was a called strike...it's NOT a force play as only a BATTED ball can result in a force play...

Thanks Willy, that was the ump's position. Apparently he made the right call. None of us coaches were sure. It seemed counter intuitive that the run should count but you cleared that up.
