Default Player Hits Umpire

In a close game Monday night against to bottom 2 teams in the league, An outfielder who was apparently dropping a few balls was replaced in the outfield by the catcher. The outfielder flips out starts cursing at his own team. Gets a team out.

Starts cursing at the umpire for giving him a team out. Gets another Team out, and is tossed from the game.

Then Runs out to the Umpire and Hits him with his Glove.

Done in ASA around here....

What an ass. Should have hit his teammates with the glove. Or maybe used the glove for catching instead. If he's dropping fly balls, he might not play enough to miss being banned from the area.

Never heard of this Team Out concept. Sounds kind of like a Technical Foul in hoops. Interesting.

was it a shove or a out and out whipping of the glove at the ump.....if the guy was really pissed he would have slugged the ump but being he probably mushed his glove in his chest or face means he was more frustrated and embarrassed more than anything....but any contact with an ump is outs for a LONG time

My father is umpire, and a few years ago he got hit in the face by a player. The guys entire team basically attacked him. I know we've all gotten upset about calls, but what makes you hit some poor schmuck umpiring recreational softball? I can't see myself doing that.

I don't know how or why anyone would want to hit an ump.

there are a few times where I was really pissed at an ump and I could see hitting him HOWEVER, cooler heads and common sense prevailed.....forget all the bull shit, "how could you hit an ump and it's just a game" rah rah because emotions of a playing a rival team or big game can blind a person ...not that it is right but it happens...so don't be naive as to say...."how could this happen"....as long as they reward teams with T-shirts and trophies for winning...ANYTHING can happen

He threw his glove at the umpire while walking towards him. I am assumimg that his teammates stepped in. I left right before that.

Received E-mail from Umpire Involved

My apologies for not getting this report out Monday night.
We were in the bottom of the sixth, K of C at bat, Max's on defense. K of C scored one, possibly two runs, when the left center fielder misplayed a ball. Max's decided to make a defensive change and removed this player. As the player walked through the infield, he voiced his disapproval very loudly and used several unacceptable words. I assessed a team out against Max's for this outburst. The player continued his tirade and I had to assess a second out. He then directed remarks toward me using the "f -bomb". I assessed a third out against the team. At this point, he threw his glove at me and was ejected from the game. Several of his teammates escorted him from the field. Several K of C players came and stood next to me. I then realized that because K of C was ahead and Max's would not be able to bat in the seventh inning, I declared the game to be concluded. I am sure that there was some more dialogue between the ejected player and me but, I cannot recall exactly what was said. I do recall saying that he would not be eligible to play for a while.
I see from your e-mail to John Morgan that you have already taken action. The Poughkeepsie Umpires Association appreciates your prompt response to this incident. I am not pleased with the way the game ended but, I believe that I enforced the rules correctly. If you should need to speak with me at any time, please call 845-xxx-xxxx
